Frankly, we’re not bothered by the lack of 4K or high frame rates. For what action cameras are typically tasked with, 1080p is just fine — it’s the content that matters, not the pixels. Yes, we enjoy having the option for 4K when it’s there, but if you’re a casual user, you probably don’t need to worry about this. What’s more, 1080p means you can fit more footage onto the same MicroSD card, and it will take up less space on your phone or computer when you transfer it. This isn’t just a positive side-effect; it could be a real advantage for some users — the same users who would choose to set their Hero5 or Hero6 cameras to 1080p mode for this reason.

Do you need a filter for GoPro underwater?

Since there’s an exposed cut-out on the side of the frame, you can actually remove the USB port cover – just remember to reattach it if you intend to use the camera in water. This means you don’t have to remove the camera from the frame to charge it, or if you need to power the camera for a long period – for a lengthy time-lapse video, for instance – while keeping it mounted.
Typically, this is the part where I would say something like "GoPro's only real competition is itself." Of course, there's the Sony Action Cam line, which has some dedicated followers but isn't quite as versatile as a GoPro, thanks to fewer mounts and the slim-but-tall form factor. There's now a new rival from DJI. I already thought the Hero 7 was a better overall camera than the Osmo Action, despite strong competition on the stabilization front (and that second, forward-facing "selfie" screen). The Hero 8 just makes that decision a little clearer.

I'll admit, I wasn't expecting too much from HyperSmooth when the Hero 7 was revealed. GoPro already added stabilization in the Hero 5, and then an "improved" version of it in the Hero 6, so when it was repackaged in the Hero 7 it was easy to assume it was another incremental upgrade. I was wrong: It was truly impressive and made almost everything shot with it much much better.

If you read the terms of the trade up programme it states that the money will be “held” in your account while they review your trade in. They hadn’t charged me for anything so on the 6th December I contacted them just to see when the money would leave my account and concerned about meeting the Christmas delivery dates. I was told that as the terms state the new product will ship within 14 days there is nothing that can be done until then. I thought that was fair enough as they had a clear SLA.

As for video quality, it really isn’t bad. If you’re viewing footage at 100 percent on a computer, you’ll definitely notice some softness and lack of fine details. However, this looks to be more of an issue of heavy-handed compression and digital sharpening rather than a lack of pixels. On a smaller screen, like a smartphone, it would be really difficult to notice a difference between the Hero and the 4K-shooting Hero6 Black.

Linear mode, the setting that removes any lens warp in real time, is now available in 4K. (It only worked up to 2.7K previously.) You can also combine Linear mode with HyperSmooth for stable, unwarped video at the highest resolution -- a sort of "greedy boy" mode, but it likely will crush the battery life. There's also a new Narrow mode, which GoPro says is akin to the field of view you might be used to recording with on your phone.
For still-image fans, there's a new LiveBurst photo mode, which is a lot like Apple's Live Photo feature. In this mode, the camera snaps images 1.5 seconds before and after you press the shutter button, increasing your chances of getting a great shot, which you can also share as a short gif-like clip. SuperPhoto (GoPro's HDR mode) also touts improved photo quality in varying light conditions.

Also note that their newest line of cameras, the HERO3+ (plus) are only smaller in size and lighter in weight. As of now, the Black Edition for both Hero3 and Hero3+ are only a few dollars different in terms of price, so go for the plus! And now that the HERO4's are out, check the prices of previous versions as they'll be dropping slowly. Unless of course you want the newest of the new, check out their HERO4!

What is the best action camera for the money?

Terrible company, thought it was best to buy direct from GoPro rather than Currys or john Lewis. What a mistake that was. I ordered the black Friday deal for the hero 8. Had an email saying it was delivered on the 4th and signed for by me. I wasn't there, no one was home none of my neighbours have signed for it. Taken over a week for them to look into it and there response was great news you received your package and included the same tracking details as I previously had. But not got it, not signed for it, and they don't seem much use in resolving the issue.

If you're lamenting the lack of hardware upgrades, the Hero 8 still has something for you. Alongside the new camera, GoPro is announcing a line of "mod" accessories, similar to Motorola's Moto Mods. At time of writing, these include a Media mod (a frame with shotgun mic built in, HDMI connectivity, 3.5mm audio in and two cold shoes); a light mod (200 lumens, tuned for video); and a Display mod that adds a fold-out screen so you can frame yourself while looking at the camera. (As a bonus, it has its own battery built-in.) Mods will cost between $49 and $79 each.

GoPro is leading the charge toward consumer-created virtual reality (VR) environments, and their first VR-ready cameras make it happen with what they’ve dubbed “spherical capture,” which is pretty accurate, given the 360° field of view they record. VR is still a nascent technology, but it’s definitely the future. If you’re an early adopter, you’ll want to pick up a GoPro with spherical capture.
GoPro cameras are known for their premium shooting capabilities, but not all of them hold up underwater. Some options are a bit blurry, while others lack great depth. Always ensure the GoPro you take diving is able to shoot as well underwater as it can on land. A bit of quality difference is not the end of the world, but you want your videos to be as clear as possible.

I'll never buy a gopro ever again. The worst company I have ever used. Ordered a gopro 3 months ago, still not delivered, told me they issued a refund on a date before I actually bought it (figure that one out) then remembered they didn't issue a refund, now refusing to refund my tax money (what the actual fk), won't give me my trade in camera back, won't honour my original order and will only give me a discount if I buy their most expensive camera?? Absolute con artists

Versatility is a more subtle aspect to focus on when purchasing a camera, but it is vital to know what accessories you can use with your GoPro. The devices are known for their mix-and-match capabilities, and that means you need to be able to switch add-ons in and out when you see fit. There are many ways to enhance your underwater experience. Make sure your camera can handle them all.

QuikStories is GoPro’s answer to the question of what do you do with all of the footage, time-lapse sequences, and photos you took from your last adventure. To use the feature, you’ll first need to install the additional GoPro Quik app (find it on iOS or Android). Quik can see all of the videos and photos on your phone — whether they were shot on your GoPro or not — and will create an automatic edit that combines them into something easily consumable in your Facebook or Instagram feed. You can set some basics, like the mood and duration, and the app handles the rest.
First of all, the camera itself is physically different from last year's version. Most notably, the Hero 8 now has the mounting fingers built in (meaning, the "pins" that slide into the top of a pole). This means you'll no longer need a "frame" mount to connect it to accessories. This also means easy access to the battery and memory card at all times. Another perk is that this reduces the total footprint of the camera when mounted.
